Knotted are a folky pop five-piece band fronted by singer songwriter Steve Farrell. Into their second decade of creating music they entertained the crowd with their catchy storytelling songs.
With many changes to the line-up over the years the band are now enjoying stability with Will Allinson (guitar/vocals), Lennon Price-Morris (guitar), Robbie Birtwell (cajon) and Richard Bennett (keyboard) and Steve on vocals.
The recent addition of Richard on the keyboard adds a good depth to their tracks and with a tickle on the accordion to bring more sounds to the stage. The cajon is a good sound with this style of music as it is so complimentary and both guitar players are wonderful musicians bringing their differing guitar tones to provide a full band sound with plenty of layers.
Steve’s lyrics are all about life and are very relatable. The stories which come through experiencing life’s great adventures, whether good or bad. He’s also got a lovely tone to his voice which combined with his lyrics captures your attention and makes you want to listen.
With the release of their 8th studio album ‘The Weekender’ we were treated to a couple of new tracks from the album and plenty of tracks from their archives. There was also a very enjoyable cover of the Elvis song “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ which Steve encouraged the audience to sing along to. Steve managed to get the audience singing along to more songs by giving us a few heads-up on the upcoming lyrics in the chorus so we could all join in. He made it fun.
A strong ‘Beautiful South’ feel, however if you are anywhere near that level of talent then yes we’re all going to enjoy it.
There were two support slots for this gig as The Garage is encouraging and supports new music. First up were duo Dark Diversions with a very interesting range of tracks. Acoustic versions of heavy metal and rock tracks with delightful twists, for example, we had tracks from Poison, Rammstein and Edith Piaf. The singer was able to sing delightfully in English, German Spanish and French! A very interesting duo with both originals and covers and willing to push a few boundaries and be unique.
Next up were Generation 29 with their first ever gig. Apart from a little lack of confidence for a fist gig they showed fantastic potential. The female singer had a beautiful blusey jazzy tone to her voice and hopefully she will get to explore that. The three lads were good musicians and the guitarist was thumping out some cracking melodic riffs.
The Garage in Norwich has a full programme of events in theatre, dance, music and fitness and is a venue to keep an eye out for exciting performances.
